Indesign Text Frame with Title in or on Border

InDesign's "Paragraph Rules" Rule

With InDesign's paragraph rules we can create a bordered text frame and make a title that covers the frame's border.

Text Box 1
Text Box 2
Text Box 3
Text Box 4
Text Box 5

To achieve this effect, we need to style two elements:

1 the paragraph holding the frame title, and

2 the text frame.

The first line in our text frame will hold our title and we need to style it as follows:

  • apply a positive Baseline shift alt in order to raise the line upwards
  • apply a paragraph rule from the Paragraph panel menu (or press Command-Option-J/Ctrl-Alt-J)

alt

  • the weight parameter will give us the height of bar we want behind the frame title.
  • select Solid for type.
  • Paper for colour if you want to hide the border or any other colour if you want to put your title in a coloured box.
  • select text for width if you want the rule to be behind the text only, or column if you want the rule wide as the frame.
  • play around with offset, and indents to get the desired style you are after.
